Doctor Scroggy’s War

By Howard Brenton

Directed by: Sean Turner
Assistant Director: Zachary Hart

About the play

A hard-hitting play about the pioneering work of Dr Harold Gillies: a plastic surgeon who developed new methods of skin-grafting, during WW1, to restore the faces of badly mutilated soldiers at the Queen’s Hospital in Sidcup, Kent. These injured men had faced artillery barrages, poisonous gas attacks and other terrible conditions but still felt determined to return to the front line and rejoin their regiments and the camaraderie of war. This piece tackles survivor guilt, the horrors of warfare and the ability to laugh in the face of it all.
